How I see my role as a supervisor
The relationship between supervisor and supervisee has an effect on the quality of client work. My focus is on developing a great rapport with supervisees as a trustworthy, supportive presence in their counselling role.
What do I like about having supervision myself?
A safe, confidential place to bring what comes up for me in client work
Feeling supported both personally and with client work
I like being challenged. The right questions enable me to reflect on my work with clients. Challenge may be about noticing what comes up for me when sitting with a client, this may be transference, or counter-transference.
My modalities in client work are Gesthalt, Psychosynthesis, and Person-centred. I enjoy examining these in more depth, and to explore what issues may look like through the lens of another way of working.
I always come away from my own supervision feeling inspired. Thought provking insights from my supervisor encourage me to look stuff up- resrearch, to find relevant CPD, or to have some quiet comtemplative time to myself.
This all helps me to feel prepared for anything in my client work, enabling me to ‘go with the flow’, to be more intuitive, and autonomous in sessions.
What do I like about being a supervisor?
Being able to support counsellors in their own development as safe, ethical, intuitive practitioners.
To challenge the supervisee in their work; therapeutic growth comes through challenge, for the supervisee , and for their clients. We risk the supervisee not getting the most from their supervision sessions. This has a knock on effect to the ease, and value, of timely, cafeful challenge with counselling clients. This takes skill, to ask the right questions at the right time. To gently probe, question, and above all listen.
If we pick the easy route, in supervision, and client work, this may not always be in the our or client’s best interest.
I enjoy helping new practitioners to set up their practice. The business side of things can be daunting, so having someone who can guide you through the set-up is invaluable.
Other challenges can be marketing- how top romote your business, or deciding what makes you unique as a counsellor, to help you to stand out from others.
As a supervisor, I see my role including
- Tactful, well-timed challenge can open opportunity for therapeutic exploration by highlighting incongruence and conflicts in the supervisee’s process.
- challenge must be dome with empathy
- Benefits of challenge in supervision:
- to work out solutuions which arise with clients
- Educational- to shine a light on other modalities
- to make sure way of working is safe
- To help decision making when faced with an ethical dilemma
- to support when client work becomes uncomfortable
- To explore re-framing response to client work
- to encourage professional growth,
- to highlight issues that may have been overlooked
- to work with transference, counter transference
